Cloudy tumbler from the salt kiln
Salt-fired porcelain tumbler.
The exterior is sprayed with a thin layer of blue slip, which has softened into cloudy shades of grey and blue. Over this, an ash glaze has settled into a mossy surface, accentuating the textures of the water-etched cloud decoration. The glaze is made from ash collected from my in-laws’ wood stove, giving this piece a personal origin.
The interior is finished with a glossy, transparent chun glaze, shifting between blue-grey and green, with occasional iridescent speckles and a fine crackle. It is smooth and pleasant to drink from.
This tumbler comfortably holds 150 milliliters. The base is relatively thin, giving it a light and delicate feel in the hand.
With a rim diameter of 8 centimeters, a height of 6 centimeters, and weighing 140 grams, it is small, balanced, and comfortable to use.
This piece is food safe. Hand washing is recommended.
